Mrs. Lena Wetle Dies at Age of 87
Mrs. Lena Wetle, 87 years old, died here Saturday evening at 8 o’clock in the St. Charles hospital where she had been taken a few days previously, after many years of failing health. Mrs. Wetle, a native of Germany, had been bedfast the past six years after coming here 15 years ago from The Dalles to make her home with her son, John Wetle, 530 Trenton. Special rosary services were held last evening at the Niswonger and Winslow funeral chapel, attended by many friends who will be unable to attend the services Tuesday morning in The Dalles.

Mr. and Mrs. John Wetle and daughter, Helen, accompanied by Mrs. Leo Herbring, left Bend this morning for The Dalles to complete arrangements for the funeral, which will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Peter’s Catholic church, with Rev. R. Nooy officiating.

Besides her son and granddaughter in Bend, Mrs. Wetle is survived by the following other sons: Clem and George Wetle of Portland; Chris Wetle of Walla Walla, Wash; and Fred Wetle of The Dalles; and the following other grandchildren, Robert and John Wetle, Jr., both of Bend and now in the armed forces; Mrs. George Ritchie of Portland.

Mrs. Wetle was a member of a pioneer family in The Dalles.

JACOB WETLE, PIONEER RESIDENT, DIES

HELD ON THURSDAY MORNING AT 9:30

Jacob Wetle, resident of The Dalles district for practically a half-century, died at The Dalles hospital late Thursday afternoon after a short illness. He had made his home at 919 West Sixth street for many years after retiring from farming in the Chenowith district.

Funeral services will be conducted from St. Peter's Catholic church at 9:30 Thursday morning, Father Costello officiating. Interment will be in the local Catholic cemetery.

Jacob Wetle was born in Germany, January 26, 1848, coming to the United States at the age of 18 years and settling at St. Cloud, Minn. He came to San Francisco on the first emigrant train run over the newly constructed railroad.

He lived in San Francisco a few years and then came to Portland, residing in that city until 1880 when he moved to The Dalles and took up farming in the Chenowith district. He remained there until about 20 years ago when he retired and moved to The Dalles.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lena Wetle and five sons, Clemence and George of Portland, Fred and Chris of The Dalles and John of Bend.

Household #191 is Appelonia's parents Jacob and Elizabeth Ohlegschlager and their family. Missing from the Ohlegschlager household is Philip Adam and Maggie. Maggie was married in the fall of 1880 and may be listed elsewhere. At closer inspection the entry "William" matches the age and position in the family for the son Philip. (Perhaps recorded wrong or another name for Philip??)

Jacob WATLE and Apollonia OLEGSCHLAGER, both of Multnomah Co, married 3 Oct 1878 (license 28 Sept) at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by J F Fierens Catholic Paster; witnesses, William A. Duber and Margaret Olegschlager.

NOTES: Apollonia is the daughter of the immigrants Jacob Olegschlager and Elizabeth Gould Ohlegschlager. Margaret was a younger sister of Apollonia. Later records spell Jacob's surname as Wetle or Wettle. Immigration index spells Apollonia. (One p and 2 l's)
